The details

A 529 is the standard tax-free way to save for education, and since 2024 there's a second exit: after the account has been open 15 years, up to $35,000 of leftover money can roll into the beneficiary's own Roth IRA (subject to annual limits). Open it at birth — even with $25 — and the clock is running before kindergarten. Many states add their own tax deduction for contributions; check yours.
