The details

The federal Child Tax Credit is worth up to $2,200 per qualifying child per year. It phases out at higher incomes and part of it is refundable — meaning you can get money back even when you owe no tax. Claim it on your return every single year from birth through age 16. If you use a preparer or software it's usually automatic, but it's worth confirming your new kid is on the return the first year.
